A suspended prison sentence has been given to a man who ordered two stun guns and pepper spray on the internet.
Sebastian Robert Demyter, aged 40, of the Savoy Hotel, in Douglas, admitted three offences of illegal importation of prohibited goods and was sentenced to 16 weeks custody, suspended for two years.
Demyter admitted ordering the items on a military website.
He was sentenced by Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes to 16 weeks for each of the three offences, to run concurrently, but suspended.
An order for the forfeiture and destruction of the items was also made. Defending Demyter in court advocate Paul Rodgers said that his client had been asked by a friend to send for the items as the friend and his wife wanted them for self defence.
’He has no criminal record,’ said Mr Rodgers. ’He has attended the island on many occasions for police interviews and court appearances.
’He didn’t appreciate the offence was unlawful.’
Mr Rodgers went on to say that Demyter worked in the island and in the UK but was planning to return to his homeland of Poland after one more week working in Liverpool.
