Noble’s Hospital staff helped police to restrain a man who was aggressive, punching a wall and internal door.
James George Hewitt, of Woodbourne Square, Douglas, had to be carried out of the hospital as he refused to walk out, and then kicked out, damaging an officer’s radio.
The 34-year-old was sentenced when he appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that, on November 4 at 12.50am, the crisis response team called police saying that Hewitt had threatened to harm himself.
Police went to his home where he was said to be under the influence of alcohol.
He agreed to go to the hospital but upon arrival become unresponsive.
Hewitt was assessed by a doctor but then became aggressive and punched an internal door.
He was told to calm down by police but told them: ’I’m gonna do it again.’
Hewitt was warned he would be arrested but he then started punching a wall and shouting.
Staff assisted in restraining him and he was arrested.
But as he was being taken to a police van he refused to walk and tensed his body which resulted in him having to be carried.
Hewitt then started kicking out at police and broke one officer’s radio clip.
Once at police headquarters he told police: ’It was an accident, I didn’t mean to break the radio.’
A probation report said that Hewitt was currently signed off sick long-term with mental health issues.
Hewitt told probation that he had expected the crisis response team to arrive rather than the police as he had heightened anxiety.
Defence advocate Stephen Wood said: ’We would submit Mr Hewitt suffers from considerable difficulties which are medicated.
’He has lived a fairly reclusive life but is coming out of his shell more as a result of a blossoming relationship.’
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered Hewitt to pay a £400 fine and compensation of £100 to each of two police officers. He must also pay £125 prosecution costs.
He will pay the fine, costs and compensation at a rate of £10 per week, deducted from benefits.
