A 23-year-old man from Bride has been sentenced to community service for being drunk and disorderly and resisting arrest.

Nathan Michael Swift, of Lamb Hill, admitted the offences and was also banned from entering licensed premises and purchasing or being sold alcohol for three months.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court that on May 20 at 4.38am, police were called to Coburg Road in Ramsey after a report of an argument.

When officers arrived they saw Swift who turned to look at them, then broke into a jog.

Police caught up with him as he was said to be weaving all over the road.

He was suffering from a cut under his eye and had marks on his knuckles.

Swift sat on the pavement as he kept falling backwards.

Police offered to take him home and persuaded him to get in the back of their van.

However, Swift then said he was not going home and attempted to push his way out of the van and jump out.

He was subsequently arrested and handcuffed but continued to try to force the door open and was described as ’extremely agitated’.

Swift was warned by police that they would use Pava spray if he did not calm down but this did not deter him as he continued to struggle.

He was subsequently sprayed with the incapacitant and restrained.

Swift’s anger continued as he was transported to police headquarters as he punched and headbutted the van and spat on the window.

A probation report said that Swift told them he had been heading home after a night out with friends.

He admitted that he was intoxicated but also said that he had difficulty seeing because of his black eye.

Swift said that he could not see police at first when they were speaking to him.

He said that he did not want his parents to see the police bringing him home and had become distressed and anxious.

Defence advocate Andrew Baker said that the incident had been preceded by Swift suffering a fall and banging his head.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced Swift to 80 hours community service and ordered him to pay £125 prosecution costs.

She told him: ’This was at a time when police resources are stretched and could do without dealing with drunken locals.’
