A 35-year-old Douglas man has been jailed after assaulting a police officer and smashing a pub window.

Peter Philip Sean Nulty, of Tynwald Street, admitted two offences of assault with intent to resist arrest and property damage.

He was sentenced to 20 weeks for the assault and six for the damage matter, to run concurrently.

The court heard that Nulty had broken a window at the Rovers Return in Douglas on May 19, then swung his arm round striking a police officer who was trying to arrest him.

The court heard that Nulty is still the subject of a sentence imposed in 2012, despite being released in March 2016.

Defence advocate Paul Glover handed in a letter of apology from his client.

Mr Glover said: ’It was an impulsive stupid act born out of alcohol misuse the probation report said, and Mr Nulty completely agrees.

’He is ashamed and has learned a valuable lesson. This has acted as a reminder to him to remain on the straight and narrow. He has been out of custody for two years after serving a lengthy sentence.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ’You have a very poor record for offences far more serious and are still subject to a sentence imposed in 2012.

’But I do note there has been no offending since your release in March 2016 and you offered to pay for the window.

’Why you damaged the window has not been properly explained but it is an offence arising out of your over-intoxication.’

Nulty was also ordered to pay £195.40 to the Rovers Return in compensation and £250 to the police officer he assaulted.
