A man burgled his parents’ house, stealing a laptop, tablet computers, watches and alcohol to pay off his drug debt.

Kyle Collins, aged 22, then tried to sell some of the items to a shop in a Douglas secondhand goods store.

Collins admitted an offence of burglary theft and will be sentenced on May 2 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecutor Hazel Carroon told the court that Collins had been living with his parents at William Proctor Court in Douglas between November 2018 and February 2019.

He was said to have repeatedly asked for money to pay off a £1,000 drug debt.

But his family were said to have covered his debts previously and Collins was eventually asked to leave the home due to his drug use and stealing.

He was allowed back into the house as long as family were present but he did not have a key.

However, on March 26 Collins contacted his mother saying he needed to get into the house to get his passport and asked for a key.

The family knew that he had already taken his passport with him on a previous occasion so refused to give him one.

Collins then sent a message to his mother saying he had been beaten up due to his drug debt.

When the family arrived home they found a smashed glass panel and a hammer.

Two family dogs had been shut in a room and they could immediately see that two tablets had been taken.

Police arrived and checks found that the haul of items taken was a Sony laptop, two Samsung tablets, six watches, a watch case, two bottles of aftershave, a pair of Nike trainers, six bottles of beer and one pair of fishing gloves.

Facebook and phone messages were later found in which Collins had told a friend: ’Delete this after. I’m going up there to break in,’ and ’I’m just gonna rob from my house to get money. I’m gonna do anything it takes to get the money.’

Collins was then said to have gone to Gadget Mann in Strand Street and tried to sell the laptop, watches and tablets.

He was told they did not accept watches but the shop agreed to pay £250 for the other items providing they could test them and Collins could return later.

However, Collins was located and arrested by police.

Defence advocate David Clegg asked for a probation report before sentencing with input from the Drug and Alcohol Team and mental health services.

Mr Clegg asked that his client appear via video link from the prison on April 11 as he is being assessed for a place at probation accommodation David Gray House and if deemed suitable a bail application may be made.
