A 41-year-old man has admitted trying to post £8,430 in cash relating to criminal activity.

James Michael Roney pleaded guilty to attempting to remove criminal property from the island and will be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery on September 25.

Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane told the court that police were called to the Post Office sorting office on June 10 at 4pm.

A suspicious package intended for an address in Liverpool had been intercepted and was found to contain a child’s Lego box.

Inside the box were two further package, one containing £770 and the other £7,660.

CCTV footage was recovered from Windsor Road post office showing Roney posting the package.

A warrant was executed at his home in Laburnum Road, Pulrose, and he was arrested for money laundering.

When interviewed Roney answered ’no comment’ to all questions.

Mr Kane submitted that the case would have been suitable for summary court but under the Proceeds of Crime Act, money can only be confiscated by an order at the higher court.

Defence advocate Louise Cooil said that her client accepted the facts as presented by the prosecution and had admitted that he received £200 in payment for sending the package.

Ms Cooil asked for a probation report to be completed before sentencing.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said that it would be noted that she would have accepted jurisdiction but for the requirement to confiscate the cash.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions that Roney live at his home address, contact probation, and not leave the island without court consent.
