A motorist who crashed his car while over the drink-drive limit has been banned from driving for two years and fined £1,000.
The accident happened in King Edward Road on August 24.
Moroney, aged 20, was sentenced when he appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how, at 2.20am, Moroney was driving towards Port Jack corner when he clipped a kerb.
It caused the car to spin and hit railings on the opposite side of the road.
Police arrived and Moroney was said to be smelling of alcohol, slurring his words, and have glazed eyes.
When asked if he had been drinking he said: ’I’m not going to lie to you it was a lot.’
A blood test at police headquarters produced the result of not less than 135 - the legal limit is 80.
In a police interview Moroney told police he felt okay to drive but realised he had made an error of judgement.
The court heard that Moroney has no previous convictions.
Defence advocate Kate Alexander said: ’Mr Moroney had been out.
’He stopped drinking about 11pm. He says he felt alright to drive but made a foolish decision.
’He was 19 at the time of the matter. He lives with his parents in Baldrine and works in Douglas.
’He works shifts at night so the disqualification will have a significant impact on him.
’He is going to have to be reliant on taxis to travel to and from work.’
Ms Alexander asked for credit to be given for Moroney’s guilty plea and co-operation with the police.
’It was he, via his mother, who alerted the police to the collision,’ said the advocate.
’He didn’t know what to do and telephoned his parents for advice.
’It’s a very foolish decision he has made and he bitterly regrets it.
’He’s going to have to carry the consequences for some time.’
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered that Moroney retake his test at the end of the ban and pay £125 prosecution costs.
