A self-employed delivery driver from Ramsey has been fined £600 after admitting careless driving.
Lawrence William Hedivan, of Auldyn Walk, also had his licence endorsed with six penalty points.
Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that Hedivan, 24, was seen by a witness overtaking at the Brandish area of the Mountain Road while driving a Lexus on October 20.
The witness said they had to slam on their brakes to avoid a collision as a result of Hedivan’s manoeuvre.
Hedivan was spoken to by police at his home but denied the offence. He initially pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial review was due to take place but he later changed his plea.
Advocate Peter Taylor said: ’Mr Hedivan has taken the view his driving could have been construed as falling below the standard expected. It wasn’t as bad as the witnesses said but he accepts his standard of driving fell below the standard.
’He is a self-employed delivery driver and has driven 90,000 miles this year. He has gained far more experience than other drivers. If he was driving like this all the time there would be continual reports coming in. This was a one-off.’
The court heard Hedivan was an ’R’ plate driver at the time but that period had since expired. Magistrates ordered that he display ’R’ plates for another 12 months and pay £300 prosecution costs.
