A motorist who tried to flee from the police on two occasions has been put on probation.

Thomas James McBurnie, of Cronk y Berry, Douglas, drove through two stop signs to avoid police in Port Erin on April 27.

And he got his car stuck on a grass verge as he tried to escape from police at Axnfell plantation in Laxey on May 7.

The 21-year-old admitted failing to stop for police, careless driving, two counts of having no driving licence, two counts of having no insurance, and one of failing to provide a urine sample.

Magistrates put him on probation for two years and banned from driving for five years.

We previously reported that, on April 27 at 8.50pm, police saw McBurnie parked in a Mazda at a petrol station in Port Erin.

Police checks confirmed that he held no valid driving licence and they followed him with their lights on but he did not stop.

Police then put on their sirens as well but McBurnie only increased his speed as he drove onto Bay View Road.

Dangerous

He went through two stop signs before police decided it was too dangerous to pursue him.

On May 7 police saw McBurnie’s Mazda, this time in Laxey at Axnfell plantation.

When he saw police he tried to reverse his car but ended up on a grass verge where the vehicle got stuck and he was subsequently arrested.

He was initially arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs but at police headquarters failed to provide a urine sample.

When interviewed he remained silent throughout all questions.

Advocate Jane Gray referred to a probation report which said that he was remorseful for his actions.

Ms Gray said that her client had held a provisional licence but it had expired five months before the incidents.

’There is no evidence of injury to others or damage to other vehicles or property,’ said the advocate.

’There wasn’t a high level of traffic or pedestrians in the vicinity.’

Ms Gray said that although the report had assessed McBurnie as a high risk of reoffending, putting him on probation would reduce that risk and he would benefit from support in addressing issues.
