A motorist has been fined £800 and banned from driving for three offences.

Michael Stephen Swift, aged 30, of Broadway, Douglas, admitted having no insurance, no vehicle licence, and a a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

He appeared before magistrates for sentencing on Thursday.

Prosecutor Roger Kane told the court that police officers spoke to Swift in Dale Street, in Ramsey, on April 13.

His car had dents in the bodywork, a cracked windscreen and defective tyres and his tax had expired in June 2018.

Swift also had no insurance.

The vehicle was taken to the test centre in Tromode, where it was found by examiners to have a total of 12 defects and was deemed unroadworthy.

One-off

Defence advocate Paul Rodgers said that Swift had only used the car on a ’one-off’ occasion as he had been quoted £400 per month for insurance and could not afford to pay it.

’He appreciates if he can’t afford to insure it, he shouldn’t be on the road,’ said the advocate.

Swift was fined £400 for having no insurance, £300 for the vehicle’s condition, and £100 for having no vehicle licence.

Magistrates also ordered Swift to pay £50 prosecution costs.

He will pay the fine and costs at a rate of £10 per week.

Magistrates also endorsed his licence with eight penalty points.

It meant that he was disqualified for six months under the totting up process as he already had six points on his licence.
