A Port Erin man has been fined £1,850 and banned from driving for 12 months by Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes for a string of driving offences.

Bradley Robert Faragher, of Thornhill Close, admitted a total of nine crimes and was also ordered to pay £200 prosecution costs.

The 21-year-old was fined £400 for driving without due care or attention, £650 for two counts of driving with no insurance, £50 for driving without a licence, £200 for having a vehicle in a dangerous condition, £300 for three counts of having a defective tyre, and £250 for driving on a closed road

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how, on February 24 last year at 9pm, police were called to Arbory after a car had crashed damaging a barn door.

There was said to be a large hole in the door and the hinge was snapped. It was raining heavily and a witness said they saw Faragher driving a Ford Focus at the brow of Fisher’s Hill trying to overtake a car.

The witness said Faragher had swerved back to avoid a collision but further down the road saw that he had crashed.

Faragher told police his car had skidded and spun, then hitting the bar door.

He was charged with driving without due care or attention.

On May 5, at 8am, police performing random checks stopped Faragher in a Subaru Impreza and it was found that his licence had expired and he was not insured.

The vehicle was also found to have three defective tyres. After being taken to the vehicle test centre the Subaru was found to have a total of 10 defects.

He was charged with having no insurance, no vehicle licence, three counts of having a defective tyre, and having a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Another incident occurred on June 28 when police saw Faragher driving a Honda Civic in Ballasalla. He was said to have braked sharply to avoid entering a roundabout and police followed him.

He was stopped and it was established that he did not have insurance. He was subsequently charged with having no insurance.

Yet another incident occurred on December 9, when Faragher was stopped while driving a Ford Focus on the Sloc Road.

The road was closed at the time due to heavy snowfall. Faragher told police he was giving a friend a lift home.

He was charged with driving on a closed road.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander said that her client had applied to join the armed forces and had arranged to borrow money from his parents to pay any fines.

Deputy High Bailiff Mrs Hughes said while passing sentence: ’It seems to me some discipline from the armed services is exactly what you need.’
