A 20-year-old man has been fined £800 after being caught with the drugs ecstasy and ketamine.

Ben Simpson admitted possession of class ’A’ and class ’B’ drugs and was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court that police were called to 1886 bar in Regent Street in Douglas on October 25 at 1.20am.

Security staff there had requested police assistance after escorting Simpson from the bar.

As the police approached he tried to make off but was detained and a small snap bag containing a white powder dropped from his person.

After being arrested and searched police found another wrap in his jeans containing a green substance.

The drug were later identified as 0.2 grams of MDMA (ecstasy), valued at £8, and 0.1 grams of ketamine, said to be worth £4.

When interviewed by police, Simpson, who lives in Fairways Court, Port Erin, said he bought the ecstasy from a man outside Peggy’s nightclub on Loch Promenade for £40.

Mr Swain said that he had been ’clearly overcharged’.

It was said that the offences may not have come to court but Simpson already has a previous caution and has previously been referred to the Drug Arrest Referral Scheme (DARS).

Defence advocate Jim Travers handed in letters of reference for his client and said that it was his first appearance in a court.

’Mr Simpson loses his good character today and that will have implications beyond the courtroom,’ said the advocate.

’We are talking about very low quantities of both drugs. Unfortunately Mr Simpson appears before court for weekend recreational dabbling. He knows he must steer clear of that conduct in future.’

Deputy High Bailiff Chris Arrowsmith ordered Simpson to pay the fine and costs at a rate of £50 per month.
