A man who bought alcohol for his 17-year-old cousin has been fined £150.

Luke Geoffrey Pickup, aged 27, of Demesne Road, Douglas, was also fined £100 for possessing cannabis.

He admitted both offences while charges of property damage and cultivating cannabis, which Pickup had denied, were withdrawn.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court how, on July 17, Pickup drove to EVF garage on Peel Road in Douglas.

While there he was approached by the teenager who gave him cash which he then used to buy a one litre bottle of vodka.

Pickup came out of the shop and passed a bag containing the vodka to the 17-year-old.

A witness reported seeing the incident, which resulted in CCTV footage being viewed by police.

On October 19, 0.5 grams of cannabis, valued at £10, was recovered from Pickup’s vehicle during a police search.

Defence advocate Stephen Wood said: ’A number of potentially serious matters were withdrawn.

’There has been significant stress for Mr Pickup.

’He has suffered from ill health previously and the stress of having matters hanging over his head for some time had led to his family becoming concerned for his well-being.

’He found himself in police custody and court, and what we are left with are not the most serious of matters.

’He pleaded guilty to the cannabis matter some time ago.

’The alcohol-related offence was not Mr Pickup purchasing it for a random child.

’It was a family member and was a chance encounter.

’He mistakenly agreed to buy his cousin a bottle of vodka.’

Mr Wood asked magistrates to take into account the stress caused by the other offences which had not been proceeded with.

Magistrates ordered Pickup to pay the fines at a rate of £10 per week deducted from benefits.

No prosecution costs were ordered.
