A footballer who plays for Pulrose has been fined £275 after his cup final celebrations got out of hand.
Barry George English, of Darragh Way, Douglas, admitted being drunk and disorderly outside Bordello’s nightclub on Loch Promenade.
The 29-year-old plasterer got plastered after Pulrose won the Woods Cup beating Marown on Good Friday at the Bowl.
Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how, on March 31 at 12.50am, police were on patrol near Bordello’s when they heard English outside shouting: ’No No I don’t have to go further,’ and swearing at a woman.
He was said to be smelling strongly of alcohol and was warned by police to leave the area.
However, English ignored the warnings and continued arguing for 10 minutes.
Arrest
He was warned he would be arrested but swore and said: ’I’m celebrating, Pully won the cup.’
He was arrested and taken to police headquarters.
Defending English in court, his advocate David Clegg said: ’Mr English is a keen footballer, he plays for Pulrose.
’It’s been 40 years since they won the cup.
’He went out celebrating and it seems celebrated too much.
’He wants to apologise, he feels quite ashamed for letting himself get into that state.
’His memories of the evening in question are somewhat hazy but he doesn’t seek to excuse his behaviour. He understands police have better things to do.
’He wishes he’d taken police advice to leave when he failed to do so.’
Chair of the magistrates Brian Walton said while passing sentence: ’I’m sure you were pleased Pulrose won the cup after 40 years but unfortunately you didn’t take police advice.’
English was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
