Storm Doris is causing travel chaos across the island.

The high winds have brought down a number of trees on roads and flights, sailings and bus services have been affected.

Police force incident manager Barry Hand said: 'The storm has arrived, and is currently affecting the south of the island the worst at present.

'I would like to advise the public to stay indoors if you can, and not to take any unnecessary journeys.

'Trees are coming down near Ballasalla, electricity cables have fallen onto moving vehicles, and tiles are being blown off roofs in Port Erin.

'Stay home, stay dry, stay safe.

'Please only call the emergency services for emergency matters only at this time.’

The police and Department of Infrastructure has reported problems in the following locations:

- The road running past the NSC and Douglas power station is closed as part of the power station roof has come away and is flapping in the strong winds.

- A tree is blocking Old Castletown Road near to Quine’s Hill in Port Soderick.

- Motorists are asked to avoid the area between Anagh Coar roundabout and the Blackboards as ’traffic is queuing under dangerous trees’.

- Cables have come down on top of a number of vehicles on Douglas Road, Ballasalla between Glashen Close and the Blackboards.

- The Laxey to Ramsey coast road at Dhoon is partially blocked.

- West Baldwin road is blocked by a fallen tree.

Ronaldsway airport will stay closed until 1pm. Airport director Ann Reynolds explained that a Van Air CityWing flight to Belfast had to divert back to the island.

It landed safely but the aircraft, which remains on the runway, is unable to taxi or be towed back to the stand. Both runways remain closed at a result. Airport fire engines are shielding the aircraft from the wind.

The Steam Packet cancelled its return Heysham sailing, due to depart Douglas this morning. The evening sailing is scheduled to go ahead.

The Western, Southern and Northern civic amenity sites are all closed.

To report a fallen tree call the Department of Infrastructure on 672000.
