Police officers stopped 150 vehicles on Saturday, to ask people what they were doing and where they were going.

The constabulary said it would be carrying out checks on residents who are out in public during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A police spokesman said: ’Most were adhering to the guidelines and where required showing proof of being a key worker on route to work.

’Despite this there has been an arrest for drink driving and a male dealt with for drugs who was also in contravention of the isolation rules.

’We have also stopped people who were not adhering to the 40mph limit.

’If you are out you are likely to be spoken to so make sure your journey is essential (see www.gov.im/coronavirus ).

’These measures will last only as long as required but will be enforced as their aim is to save lives.’
