A 26-year-old Foxdale man has been fined £500 for possessing £30 worth of cannabis.

Paul James Beattie, of Sprucewood Close, pleaded guilty to the offence and was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecutor Hazel Carroon told the court how, on July 4, police found a small amount of cannabis resin in a tobacco pouch on the dashboard of Beattie’s van.

He admitted the cannabis was his, saying it was for personal use.

Ms Carroon said that police had not provided any weight or value for the drug but Beattie himself had said that it was worth between £20 and £30.

Defending Beattie in court, his advocate David Reynolds asked for credit to be given for an early guilty plea.

The advocate said: ’Mr Beattie told the police the cannabis was in the van. He says he uses the cannabis for insomnia and also believes it helps with a skin condition, vitiligo.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced Beattie on the estimated value of £20 to £30 and said: ’I don’t know why the police don’t provide the weight or the value.’
