A 21-year-old man from Douglas has been fined £600 after admitting being drunk and disorderly.

Ryan Ali El Meligy, of Castle Street, was also ordered to pay prosecution costs totally £125.

He appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes for sentencing on Tuesday.

Clenched fist

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, on June 24 at 1.50am, police on patrol near Shaw’s Brow car park saw El Meligy walking with a group of men.

He was seen swinging his clenched fist at one of the men and was said to be swearing and clearly drunk.

He was subsequently arrested.

Defending El Meligy, advocate Kate Alexander told the court: ’My instructions are that prior to the group coming into view of the police Mr El Meligy had been struck in the face by a member of the group.

’He acknowledges he was drunk so he has taken a pragmatic view.

’He is sorry for his behaviour and accepts that police shouldn’t have to deal with such matters.’
