A 25-year-old man who assaulted two bouncers at the Front Porch bar in Duke Street, Douglas, has been sentenced to 180 hours community service.

Toby James Cross, of Laureston Terrace, Douglas, admitted two counts of common assault and was also ordered to pay one bouncer £300 compensation and the other £200.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the High Bailiff that Cross was asked to leave the bar by a bouncer on February 21 at 9pm.

Cross was said to have pushed the bouncer and then ended up being restrained.

A second bouncer arrived and attempted to assist with escorting Cross out of the pub.

However, Cross then broke free and was said to have directed a punch at one bouncer which missed, but hit the second bouncer, causing a black eye.

A struggle continued but Cross then broke free and left the bar.

He was said to have returned briefly to gesticulate at staff before leaving again.

Cross attended a voluntary interview with police on a later date and claimed that security staff had threatened him.

Defence advocate Deborah Myerscough handed in a number of references for her client as well as letters of apology which Cross had written to the two bouncers.

Ms Myerscough referred to a probation report which had assessed Cross at a low-risk of reoffending or harming others.

’He has made efforts to try and improve his situation,’ said the advocate.

’Even though he’s not working, he did have some work but once the employer became aware of this, he lost that job.’

Ms Myerscough said that Cross still had the chance of a job if he was not sent to custody.

She continued: ’He has not been able to apologise enough. He has indicated he would apologise face to face. He lives alone, if there was a custodial sentence he would lose his accommodation as well as the possibility of full-time work.’

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Cross: ’It was appalling behaviour. Any assault on a doorman is considered serious.’

Cross was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs which he will pay, along with the compensation, at a rate of £15 per week.
