A 21-year-old man who punched a man in a restaurant and tried to steal alcohol from a supermarket has been put on probation for 12 months.
Kieran Michael Cain admitted common assault and attempted theft and was also ordered to do 100 hours of community service.
He was also banned from entering licensed premises, and buying or being supplied with alcohol for six months.
Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that Cain was seen entering Shoprite in Victoria Road on July 24.
A member of staff saw him cradling a crate of Strongbow dark fruit cider at belly height, trying to cover it at the sides with his jacket as he left the store.
Cain, who lives in Empire Terrace, Douglas, was challenged and put down the cider as he left the shop.
However, he then began shouting and swearing outside and was eventually arrested.
On August 14 police received a report of a fight at the Titan restaurant on Broadway.
Staff said that the victim had walked into the restaurant only to be followed in by Cain who started swinging punches at him.
Customers separated the pair and Cain left. The victim said that Cain had begun punching him in Glen Falcon gardens and he had been trying to get away from him.
When interviewed about that incident Cain said he had been drinking and that was upset with himself because the man he had been punching was a friend.
The court heard that Cain was already on probation which was imposed in July.
Defence advocate Peter Taylor said that his client had been on remand for four weeks, the equivalent of an eight-week sentence.
Mr Taylor said that Cain had issues with alcohol and with articulating himself and that probation would help him as most of his offending seemed to involve alcohol.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said that she had taken into account Cain’s time on remand and discharged the previous probation order, replacing it with the combination order of probation and community service.
Cain was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs which he will pay at a rate of £15 per week, deducted from benefits.
