A ’R’ plate driver has been fined £490 for speeding and driving without insurance.

John Paul Glover, of Spring Valley Road, Douglas, admitted both offences and also had his licence endorsed with six points.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court that Glover was stopped by police on July 25 at 3.26pm while driving a Vauxhall Astra on Quarterbridge Road near the junction with Selbourne Drive.

He was travelling at 49mph in a 30mph zone and was displaying ’R’ plates which ran until August 2019.

He was given five days to produce his insurance but on July 31 went to police headquarters and said that he was not insured to drive the vehicle.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander said that the speeding had been a ’loss of concentration’ by Glover while he was on his way to pick up his child.

Ms Alexander said that Glover’s wife had been responsible for the insurance but that they had separated.

Magistrates also ordered him to pay £50 prosecution costs and extended his ’R’ plate period by six months.
