Firefighters were called to a shop on Duke Street, Douglas, after smoke was spotted – but it turned out to be false alarm.

Emergency services were called at just before 8.20am yesterday (Tuesday) to the CeX mobile phone, electronics and games shop.

The Fire and Rescue Service said the building was heavily smoke-logged on the ground floor and the fire alarm was sounding.

Firefighters entered the shop wearing breathing apparatus and used a thermal image camera to identify the source of the smoke.

Once this had been isolated the building was ventilated using a positive pressure ventilation fan.

But CeX manager Matthew Nash said it was a false alarm.

He said: ‘There was no fire. Manx Utilities were dealing with a reported fault and turned off the power to the whole block.

‘This tripped our anti-theft measures which includes a smoke bandit that produces synthetic smoke. Somebody saw the smoke and reported there being a fire.’

Emergency services remained in attendance for about one hour.

Duke Street and its junction with Wellington Street and Victoria Street were closed while the fire service and police dealt with the incident.
