A 38-year-old woman has been fined £300 after she left the island without completing a community service order.

Nicola Jane Waterworth, of Sefton Street, Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, was sentenced to 100 hours community service in May 2015 for possession of ecstasy and amphetamine.

However, she failed to attend her probation appointment to arrange the community service and left the Isle of Man in July 2015.

The court heard that Waterworth had recently returned to the Isle of Man and handed herself in to the police. Probation services asked that she be resentenced after deeming the community service order unworkable.

Talking about the original offence, prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, in April 2015, police attended Waterworth’s home in Glen Maye.

They searched the premises and found three ecstasy tablets in her car.

She was taken to police headquarters and then produced a wrap of powder from her bra which was later identified as class B drug amphetamine, known as speed.

Waterworth told officers: ’I take it in the day to lose weight.’

Defence advocate Paul Glover handed in a letter to the court from his client which referred to ongoing health issues.

’She tells me she was fully aware of the community service order,’ Mr Glover told the court.

’However, due to ongoing difficulties regarding domestic abuse she felt she had no option but to leave the island for her own safety.’

Mr Glover went on to say that Waterworth resided in Greater Manchester and was the sole carer for her two young children.

She had returned to the island in part to visit her son who was in prison.

Magistrates fined Waterworth £150 for each offence of possession.

And the community service order was revoked by the court.
