A road will remain closed overnight after two wartime shells were discovered in the garden of a house in Willaston.
Fenella Avenue has been closed from its junction with Watterson Lane to Keppel Road - and will remain so until a Ministry of Defence bomb disposal team comes over to the island tomorrow to dispose of the ordnance.
The two 35mm wartime shells, perhaps kept as a souvenir, had been found buried in the garden, during building work.
A police spokesman said a section of the road will be remain closed overnight.
He said an assessment had been made of the ordnance and it would be treated as still being live until proven otherwise.
The six homes that would have needed to have been evacuated are fortunately all unoccupied for maintenance work.
Earlier police said certain households had been requested to evacuate until it was confirmed that the ordnance was safe or could be made safe.
The police spokesman said there was no danger to the public.
He said: 'An assessment has been made on the ordnance found in a garden in Willaston.
'The items are thought to be a couple of old small WW2 shells. They will be removed tomorrow (by the MOD) and at this time a small section of Fenella Avenue between Watterson Lane and Keppel Road will remain closed.
'The small number of houses around the site were empty for construction purposes. Police will be on scene overnight and there is no danger to the public in the area.'
