A 67-year-old Douglas man has been fined £500 after a row over rubbish with a neighbour ended with him being arrested.

Andrew Fielding, of Hutchinson Square, pleaded guilty in a magistrates’ court to being drunk and disorderly and resisting arrest.

Fielding was fined £100 for the drunk and disorderly offence, £400 for resisting arrest and also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecutor Michael Jelski told the court how, on April 28 at 6pm, police were called to Hutchinson Square in Douglas after a report of Fielding being drunk and shouting at a parent near to Little Darlings Kindergarten.

When officers arrived he was said to be smelling of alcohol and unsteady on his feet. Fielding refused to give police his name or any details, then began swearing and threatening them.

He was said to have threatened to hit officers if they did not allow him to walk away and he was subsequently arrested.

Fielding continued his anger and was said to have attempted to headbutt one policeman.

He was put to the ground and more officers were called to deal with him.

Defence advocate Ian Kermode said that his client wanted to be sentenced immediately, without the preparation of a probation report.

Mr Kermode said: ’Mr Fielding wishes to clarify a couple of issues. He was speaking to a neighbour about rubbish being put in the lane near his house.

’He denies any issues with parents at the kindergarten. With reference to the attempted headbutt, he was intoxicated, shouting and swearing.

’There was a struggle and he pulled his arm away. In general he was resisting and there may have been a head movement. He had consumed about half a bottle of vodka and left his house to go to the shop when he encountered his neighbour.

’Words were spoken regarding boxes in the lane. He accepts he was intoxicated and was shouting and swearing at police when they arrived.

’He would say they perhaps inflamed the situation, that he should have just been allowed to walk away.

’But he admits he reacted inappropriately.’

Fielding was also banned from entering onlicensed premises, and buyin or being sold alcohol, for three months.

Fielding previously made the headlines in August 2015 when we reported how he was jailed for eight weeks after he pulled out a snake in the Villa Marina Gardens and showed it to a frightened teenage girl in the early hours, saying: ’I like the sound of your shoes. If I show you something do you promise not to scream?’
