Police have warned about scam letters apparently from clairvoyants.
The scams are designed to trick people into giving away money, usually offering ‘help’ in exchange for a fee.
Scammers may try and talk the victims into buying a lucky charm or secret of wealth, and once they have paid, will send them a worthless item or nothing at all.
Alternatively, the scammer may warn victims of a false future event and then promise to protect you from that event in return for continuing payments.
The police say these kinds of scams can also lead to people’s name and contact details being put onto a ‘victim list’ which will result in then receiving further scam approaches, for example unexpected prize or lottery scams or inheritance scams.
PC Kerr advises: "If you receive something like this, put it straight in the recycling bin: they are from scammers who have no abilities or powers to see into the future or to bring anybody wealth, love or happiness. Neither can they bring bad luck or poor health to you or any of your family or friends. These are not from real people and the individuals responsible for sending out the letters will never send the fortunes promised."
