Fire service staff have been subjected to abusive comments in light of two firefighters contracting Covid-19.
Two crew members tested positive for the virus last week and contact tracing is establishing the origin of the infection.
The firefighters and their families are self-isolating and one other firefighter has been identified as a high-risk contact who is also isolating along with their family.
In a statement, the service said: ’The Department of Home Affairs understands that the two firefighters who tested positive have complied with all relevant legislation and isolated immediately after being swabbed from their Covid test.
’Additionally through the contact tracing process, three firefighters from a further two fire stations were instructed to self-isolate and are also being tested.
’The service is supporting its colleagues and wishing them well.’
The statement added: ’All fire stations are currently operational to respond to emergency callouts, and crews across all stations will continue to wear additional personal protective uniform for the foreseeable future as a precaution.
’The public is asked to respect the privacy of those who are in isolation and not to speculate on the origin of this outbreak.’
Chief fire officer Kevin Groom said: ’A number of my firefighters have recently been subject to personal comments and abuse. This behaviour is totally unacceptable.
’Our firefighters are professional people who risk their lives to protect our community each day and night, year round.
’I ask that they receive the respect which they all duly deserve.’
