A 30-year-old Douglas man has been handed a suspended sentence after punching a man.
Glen Cairney, of Farmhill Park, admitted an offence of assault causing actual bodily harm and was sentenced to 16 weeks custody, suspended for two years.
He was also ordered to pay £750 compensation to the victim and £125 prosecution costs.
Defending Cairney in court advocate Paul Glover said: ’Mr Cairney reacted badly to what he perceived to be a situation between him and the complainant highlighted previously.
’Under the influence of alcohol he thought the complainant was having a laugh at his expense. He knows his reaction was disproportionate. He was able to speak to the complainant and apologised before his arrest.
’Although he perhaps couldn’t be forgiven the complainant did accept his apology. He accepts he has ongoing alcohol issues and has engaged with the Drug and Alcohol Team.
’He says there is a level of drinking problem that he tries to regulate. He doesn’t intend to make any excuses. He totally misinterpreted the situation.’
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said while passing sentence: ’It was a single punch and there was no evidence of pre-meditation on your part.’
