A teenager who committed nine offences in six days has been handed a suspended prison sentence.
Mellisa Brew, of Cronk Elfin, Ramsey, punched a woman in the street, kicked a police officer in the groin and took two cars without consent, and stole a bag of potatoes during the spree.
The 18-year-old admitted two counts of taking a vehicle without consent, two counts of theft, two counts of resisting arrest, one of assaulting a police officer, one of common assault on a female, and one of destroying property.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced her to a total of 24 weeks’ custody, suspended for two years and also banned her from driving for 12 months.
Brew was also given a licensing ban, prohibiting her from entering licensed premises and purchasing or being sold alcohol for six months.
We previously reported that Brew’s crime spree began when a MG was taken from the car park in St Paul’s Square, Ramsey early onSeptember 26. At 5.30am that day, cash and a bag of potatoes were stolen from the open air farm shop in Sulby.
The MG was found abandoned at Cranstal Road in Bride and CCTV footage showed Brew and her boyfriend Jason Liam Christian, aged 27, of Queen’s Pier Road, Ramsey in the car.
Brew and Christian were then seen later that day driving a Land Rover at the EVF garage in Kirk Michael, where Brew stole a bottle of wine. The Land Rover was found abandoned on Peel quay.
CCTV footage identified Christian as the driver. He admitted taking both vehicles without consent but Brew was jointly charged as she was as passenger.
As Brew was being arrested, she kicked a police officer in the groin but said later it had been unintentional.
Christian was previously committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for sentencing.
Pava
While on bail for the September 26 offences, Brew assaulted a woman in Parliament Street in Ramsey on October 2. She ripped off the woman’s glasses and punched her.
The women ended up on the ground with Brew pulling her victim’s hair.
The victim fled to the Star Grill takeaway, where Brew started banging on the windows, screaming and shouting. As she was arrested she pulled away from police and kicked out, eventually having to be Pava sprayed.
She continued to resist as she was put in a van and was Pava sprayed again.
Defence advocate Jane Gray said: ’Ms Brew suffers from anxiety and depression and has been using alcohol to self-medicate. She has attended Motiv8 and will be having further sessions.
’She has asked to write letters of apology to the police and her assault victim.’
Ms Gray referred to a probation report which said that Brew had been easily led, that she had started drinking at 15, and that her boyfriend was considerably older than her.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Brew: ’You need to change your attitude towards police officers whether you are intoxicated or not.’
Brew was ordered to pay £42.50 to the farm shop, £4.25 to EVF, £250 for the woman’s glasses and £100 for the assault, and £200 compensation to the police officer, as well as £125 costs.
