A teenager from Laxey has been sentenced to eight weeks’ custody after only completing 16 hours of a 70-hour community service order.
Dylan Jordan Ritchie, of no fixed abode, admitted breaching the order which was imposed in November last year.
He was said to have missed several community service workgroups and meetings and probation services deemed the order unmanageable, asking for Ritchie to be resentenced.
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said that the teenager had shown a ’total and utter lack of commitment’.
The 17-year-old was originally sentenced to community service after admitting damaging a car on June 16 by walking on its roof and bonnet.
Ritchie left trainer prints on the car which led to his arrest.
Defence advocate Matthew Wilshaw said that the teenager would like the community service order to continue despite having only completed 15 hours of the order so far.
Chaotic
Mr Wilshaw said that Ritchie led a ’chaotic lifestyle’ and was currently ’sofa surfing’ with friends as he had nowhere to live.
’He missed one appointment and knew that he was in trouble so decided not to go anymore,’ said the advocate.
Mrs Hughes reminded Ritchie that on his last court appearance he had said that he intended to seek work.
Growing up
’Probation services seem to have bent over backwards,’ said the Deputy High Bailiff.
’You’ve got a lot of growing up to do. You need to do it fast.’
The teenager will serve his time at a secure unit rather than at Isle of Man Prison due to his age.
