A teenage drink-driver from Douglas has been fined £800 and banned from driving for two years.

Euan Wylie, of Hillberry Green, admitted the offence after failing a breathalyser test with a reading of 61. The legal limit is 35.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered that the 19-year-old student retake his test at the end of the ban and attend a drink-driving rehabilitation course.

Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane told the court that police saw Wylie driving on Douglas Road in Castletown on October 1 at 9.15pm.

They followed him to King William’s College where he stopped.

Police spoke to him and reported that he was smelling of alcohol and slurring his words.

Wylie claimed he had drunk one pint at 6pm.

After failing a roadside breathalyser test he was arrested and taken to police headquarters where he failed a further test with the 61 reading.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions.

Defence advocate Jane Gray said: ’Mr Wylie consumed three cans of lager over a few hours and thought he would be fine to drive.’

Ms Gray handed in a reference from Wylie’s tutor which described her client as a ’very able young man with a bright future’.

High Bailiff Mrs Hughes gave Wylie credit for his guilty plea and his co-operation at the scene and during the intoxiliser process and told him: ’You are risking that future.’

The teenager was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
