Thomas Daniel Richards, of Ballabrooie, pleaded guilty in court to three offences of driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance and damaging property.
Prosecutor Michael Jelski told the court how Richards, who is 18, had been disqualified from driving in September last year for two years for dangerous driving.
However, on March 31 at 9.30pm, a police patrol saw two cars parked in Tower Street in Ramsey, one of which was identified as belonging to Richards.
Police parked behind the two cars and approached to speak to Richards.
The teenager was said to have then reversed his car at speed, hitting the other parked car and narrowly missing the police vehicle.
He then sped off.
Police searched for Richards and he was located at 10pm in Sulby village.
He was arrested and told police: ’You are bullying me.’ His car was later found abandoned at Glen Auldyn.
During a police interview he gave a ’no comment’ response to all questions.
Mr Jelski told the court that he had not been told of the value of the damage to the car hit by Richards.
Defending Richards in court his advocate Louise Cooil said: ’My client has taken a pragmatic view and wants to be sentenced today.
’He doesn’t want to waste any further court time. The facts are accepted and he doesn’t seek to make excuses.
’His behaviour was reckless. He can’t explain why he decided to drive that evening. He would say that driving provides him with a release from emotional difficulties but he is aware he can’t continue in this vein. He intends to find an alternative avenue to restore his emotional well being.’
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ’You are accumulating a serious record of offences. You were disqualified in September last year. ’You have not only driven in March, but in a manner described as dangerous.
’You narrowly missed a police vehicle. You could have been charged with far more serious offences.
’But I will sentence you on the basis it was reckless and you didn’t intend to cause the damage.
’Keep away from vehicles until your disqualification has ended. You are going to have to find a different release for any difficulties you have.’
Richards was sentenced to 10 weeks’ custody for each offence of driving while disqualified and criminal damage, to run concurrently.
No separate penalty was made for the insurance offence but his disqualification was extended by a further 12 months and he must retake his test at the end of the ban.
