A teenager prisoner has been jailed after biting two prison guards as he tried to escape while at Noble’s Hospital.
Kyle Reece Wright also kicked a member of the public in the face during the struggle.
A court was this week told he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the offences.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced the 18-year-old to 28 weeks in custody after he pleaded guilty to three counts of common assault and one of attempting to escape.
Mrs Hughes said that it was concerning that Wright was under the influence of drugs at the time of the offence considering he was a prisoner.
We previously reported that, on April 29 at 7pm, police were called to the hospital after a report of an incident.
Wright, whose address was given in court as care of the prison, had been escorted to the hospital by two prison guards as he was serving a sentence at the time.
He told them he wanted to go to the toilet but when he came out he refused to be handcuffed again, swearing at the guards and running towards the exit.
He was grabbed by the two prison officers and a civilian who tried to help restrain him.
But during the struggle Wright bit both officers on the arm and kicked the civilian in the face causing a cut to their lip.
When interviewed later about the incident Wright gave ’no comment’ responses.
The court heard that Wright’s sentence had ended on May 31 but he had opted to stay in prison on remand for the latest offences.
Defence advocate Michael Mudge said that Wright was under the influence of drugs at the time of the offence.
The advocate said: ’The decision to try to escape was impulsive. ’It had no real prospect of success. He had no resources or outside help. Simply put, it was an incredibly unsophisticated attempt. At no point did he escape. As soon as he moved towards the door he was apprehended.’
Mrs Hughes sentenced Wright to 18 weeks custody for each count of common assault, to run concurrently to each other, and 10 weeks for attempting to escape, to run consecutively.
