A teenager from Ramsey has been fined £1,000 by magistrates after admitting careless driving twice in a month.
Niall William Martin, of Coronation Court, also received six penalty points for each offence meaning he was disqualified under the totting up process for six months.
Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how, on August 16 at 1.44pm, police were called to an accident near Oust corner in Regaby, near Andreas.
Eighteen-year-old Martin’s Vauxhall Corsa had been involved in an accident with a Toyota Yaris but he had driven away and was located near Ramsey Cottage Hospital and stopped.
He told police he had left the scene because he needed to go to the toilet.
The driver of the Yaris said he had been overtaken by Martin prior to a right hand bend and had subsequently flashed his lights and beeped his horn at the teenager.
At Oust corner the Yaris driver, who was also cautioned over the incident, said that Martin had stopped and he had driven into the back of him.
Martin disputed this, saying that he had slowed down but had not stopped.
The teenager admitted careless driving by overtaking prior to the bend.
In a second incident, on September 17, a police inspector was driving home after her shift at 2am when she saw Martin overtake her at speed in the area of Cronk-ny-Mona with his lights on full beam.
She reported the incident and Martin was later seen by another police officer overtaking, contravening a solid white line travelling at around 70mph.
Defence advocate Stephen Wood, talking about the August incident, said that his client had thought there had been sufficient space to complete the overtaking manouevre.
’He did go and use the toilet with the intent to go to Ramsey police station afterwards,’ said the advocate.
Regarding the September offence, Mr Wood said: ’He accepts he should not have undertaken the overtaking manoeuvre where he did. As a result of court appearances and the requirement to be away from work he has lost his job.’
Martin was also ordered to pay £100 prosecution costs.
