A teenager who drove at 90mph, exceeding the 50mph limit imposed on R plate drivers, has been fined £400.

Amelia Janet Grace Avery, of Crosby Terrace, Crosby, also had her licence endorsed with six points and her R plate period extended by 12 months.

Prosecuting advocate Chrissie Hunt told the court that police saw the 18-year-old driving in St John’s heading to Peel on December 4.

As they followed she was said to have reached 90mph reducing to 80mph between the quarry and the Queen Elizabeth II High School.

She was subsequently stopped and admitted she knew the R plates restricted her to 50mph.

Her front ’R’ plate was also missing, with Avery telling police it had flown off that morning.

Avery initially sent a postal admission to exceeding the ’R’ plate limit and failing to display a ’R’ plate but magistrates ordered her to attend court as a disqualification was a possibility.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander asked for credit to be given for her client’s guilty plea and co-operation with police, and also handed in a letter to the court from Avery.

’Ms Avery has had a visit from a roads policing officer who has spoken to her about the perils of driving at excess speed,’ said the advocate.

’It is accepted she is a relatively inexperienced driver but we would ask the court to step away from disqualification.’

The court heard that she has no previous convictions.

Magistrates also ordered Avery to pay £50 prosecution costs and gave her two months to pay the fine and costs.
