A Douglas teenager has been fined £450 for possessing £205-worth of cannabis.

Cairo Dean Benjamin, of Sumark Croft, admitted two counts of possession and was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how Benjamin, who is 19, was found with the drug while he was in a car with four other men on Harbour Road, Onchan, on July 29.

He was asked by police if he had anything he shouldn’t have and handed over a small jar containing green matter, identified as herbal cannabis weighing 1.2 grams with a value of £24.

Also found in his pockets were amounts of cannabis resin weighing 8.6 grams worth £49, 7.6 grams worth £43, 7.8 grams worth £44, and eight grams valued at £45.

Mr Swain said that no evidence of drug-dealing had been found.

A probation report said that Benjamin said that he intended to cease his use of illicit drugs.

He was said to have previously served a custodial sentence but was the report described him as ’not heavily convicted’.

Defence advocate Louise Cooil said: ’Mr Benjamin came to the attention of the police through something somebody else did. He entered his guilty plea at the earliest opportunity.

’We are some considerable time from the date of the offences.’

Ms Cooil went on to say that her client may not be suitable for community service due to injured ligaments in his leg.

Benjamin was fined £300 for the resin offence and £150 for the possession of the herbal cannabis.
