A teenager has admitted driving while under the influence of drugs.

Ethan James Kaighin crashed his car in Chester Street car park in Douglas.

The 18-year-old pleaded guilty to driving while unfit, careless driving, and possession of cannabis and will be sentenced on December 17.

Prosecuting advocate Rachael Braidwood told the court how Kaighin was driving a Volkswagen Polo in Chester Street car park at 1.30am on May 25.

While driving onto level three he swerved onto a curb of a ramp in the car park and damaged the Polo’s windscreen and tyre.

Members of the public living nearby called police reporting that they had heard a loud bang.

When officers arrived Kaighin, who lives in Barrule Drive, Onchan, was said to have glazed eyes but was not smelling of alcohol.

He was described as ’rocking back and forward’ and unsteady on his feet.

A search of the car found cannabis valued at £1.14 and blue tablets.

A doctor who examined Kaighin at police headquarters concluded that he was unfit to drive through drugs.

A toxicology report showed cannabis, benzodiazepine and low levels of ketamine.

None of the levels individually were above the UK legal limit which is used for reference here but Kaighin was charged due to there being more than one drug in his system.

When interviewed he handed in a prepared statement saying the cannabis and tablets were for personal use.

He then answered ’no comment’ to all questions.

Ms Braidwood said that the case was suitable for sentencing in summary court.

Deputy High Bailiff Chris Arrowsmith agreed, accepting jurisdiction, and adjourning the case until December 17.

Bail continues in the sum of £500 with a condition that Kaighin contact probation.
