A teenager has been sentenced to 28 weeks’ custody after being drunk and disorderly three times in nine days.

Robyn Sarah Poppy Leadley, of Derby Road, Douglas, also admitted assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and common assault all committed during the same spree.

During the nine-day spell, the 17-year-old also kicked, punched and spat at nurses at the hospital and urinated in a police van.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court that Leadley’s latest crimes began on June 18 when police were called to Noble’s Hospital and found six members of staff restraining the teenager.

She was said to be drunk and had punched one and tried to bite another as she shouted and swore at staff.

During a police interview she told police she had drunk two bottles of vodka and could not recall events saying: ’You would have to take it up with drunk me.’

shouting

On June 21, police were called to Castletown after a report of Leadley being drunk again and shouting outside the police station there.

When officers arrived she was seen banging on the Civic Centre door, swearing and shouting: ’I want my money.’

As she was arrested, she flailed her arms at police as she was put on the ground then carried to a police van.

Leadley continued her abuse as she swore and then urinated in the van on several occasions.

The teenager’s crimes continued on June 26 when police were called to Poulsom Park in Castletown after a report of her being naked from the waist down, drunk and urinating.

When police arrived she ran off, shouting abuse and swearing.

Leadley was said to be struggling to stay upright as she ran and was subsequently arrested.

She then tried to bite police as she thrashed about continuing to shout and swear.

Advocate Jane Gray handed in a psychiatric report which said that Leadley was a vulnerable young woman with a history of poor mental health.

’The majority of her convictions stem from the use of alcohol,’ said Ms Gray.

’The main root cause is her mental health. Because of her conditions she is using alcohol as almost a form of self-medication.

’She is a young individual having difficulties regarding her emotions.’

Ms Gray went on to say that the June 18 offences had stemmed from a family argument.

The advocate said: ’Probation does seem to be addressing her issues. She has expressed remorse.

’She says she feels more determined than ever to accept support she will be offered. She has a friend group that also drinks. She has stated she will stay clear of that friend group.’

A probation report assessed Leadley as being at a high risk of harm to the public and of reoffending.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Leadley: ’Fourteen previous convictions for assaulting police and 13 assaults on care and hospital staff doesn’t demonstrate someone who’s expressing remorse.’
