A teenager from Crosby who drove to the scene of a car crash to help his friend has been fined £400 by magistrates for driving without insurance or a licence.

Aaron Paul Field, aged 18, of Close Eyreton, admitted the offences and was also banned from driving for six months.

Mr Jelski told the court how, on July 1 at 4am, a car driven by a friend of Field was involved in an accident at Braaid Road. The driver called Field to tell him he had crashed his car and did not know what to do.

Field drove to the scene of the accident despite having no licence or insurance. One of the passengers in the crash was said to have suffered a fractured hip.

Defending Field in court, advocate David Reynolds told the court that his client had no previous convictions.

The advocate said: ’He was in bed when his friend phoned him and told him about the accident. He took his own vehicle and arrived at the scene. When he realised the serious nature of the accident he phoned the police and ambulance.

’He realised something had to be done quickly and that it would draw police attention to the fact that he didn’t have a licence.

’He assisted the injured party at the accident. It has been a stark reminder that driving without a licence is not satisfactory no matter how competent you feel.’

He added: ’He had driving lessons and lessons from his mum but lost his job and wasn’t able to continue with the lessons.

’He wants to pass his test but realises that is going to be hindered today by his own actions.

’This is a young man who is into cars and has been fanatical about learning to drive.’

Field was fined £400 for having no insurance with no separate penalty made for the licence offence.

He was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs.

Meanwhile, Field agreed to accept a caution with a charge of obstructing police, which he had previously denied, being withdrawn by the prosecution.
