A teenager was this week jailed for eight months after a spree of thefts and failing to attend several probation meetings.

Rosemary Burgess, aged 18, of no fixed address, admitted stealing from Dealz in Strand Street and Manx Oriental on Castlemona Avenue, as well as a mountain bike from outside a house.

She also pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis.

We previously reported previous court appearances that heard that a purple Muddy Fox bicycle was reported missing from an address at Woodbourne Square in Douglas on April 24.

The bike had been left unsecured outside the property.

On April 25, the owner’s mother posted on social media that her daughter’s bike had been stolen.

quizzed

A witness then reported seeing a girl pushing a similar bike at Ballakermeen Close and said that he had quizzed the girl about it but she had claimed it was her bicycle.

The same witness then saw a report regarding Burgess being arrested and identified her as the girl pushing the bike. Police recovered the bike which had been damaged.

When interviewed Burgess gave ’no comment’ responses to all questions.

Burgess was then arrested for shoplifting on July 24. She had stolen tobacco products worth £52 from Manx Oriental on Castlemona Avenue, and socks and hair bobbles worth £2.40 from Dealz on Strand Street.

The teenager was also found in possession of 0.3 grams of cannabis worth £6.

The court heard that Burgess had missed probation meetings on June 2, June 4, June 9, and June 24 which put her in breach of a suspended sentence supervision order.

Defence advocate Paul Rodgers said: ’Ms Burgess is an 18-year-old girl and remains an immature girl, that’s very clear from the probation report.

’All of these offences occurred when she has been addicted to class ’C’ drugs. She is of a view that if she wasn’t high on these substances she wouldn’t have committed the offences.’

Mr Rodgers pointed out that the bicycle theft had been committed before the suspended sentence was imposed.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes activated the six month suspended sentence in full and also sentenced Burgess to four months for the bicycle theft to run concurrently.

Burgess was also sentenced to two months for the two shop thefts to run consecutively.

Mrs Hughes told the teenager: ’You will be given help in prison with any addictions. Take that help and turn your life around.’
