A Peel man who was involved a melee outside a pub during a wake has been fined £450.

Mark Benjamin William Quane, aged 35, of Market Street, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour on licensed premises.

The incident, at the Peveril, took place on June 18.

We previously reported that Rebekka Lowther, aged 23, of Alder Road, Douglas, was fined £450, and Ewan Foster Jankowicz, aged 21, of Victoria Avenue, Douglas, was sentenced to 120 hours’ community service for their part in the brawl.

Quane appeared before magistrates last week.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court that the wake was being held at the pub with emotions running high and the police having been called previously to the pub.

CCTV

At 7.30pm an argument started in the toilets between Quane’s partner and Lowther.

CCTV footage then showed Lowther go into the beer garden outside and become involved in a heated discussion with Quane which resulted in him raising his middle finger to her.

Quane was then said to have angrily approached a group and pushed a woman with an unidentified man throwing punches at Quane.

Quane and the man wrestled with others trying to intervene and it ending in a melee on the ground.

Lowther was said to have stamped down at someone during the brawl and Quane was said to have punched out once.

In court Quane entered a basis of plea which was accepted by the prosecution in which he said he had gone to the Peveril with his partner and a friend.

He said there had been a rowdy group of people from Douglas who he did not know at the wake and the group was abusive to his partner.

Abusive

Quane accepted that he swore at them and made an abusive gesture.

He admitted pushing a woman and said he had been attacked by several people and had punched out once himself.

Defence advocate Ian Kermode said his client was signed off work ill so community service was not an option. He said: ’Mr Quane attended the Peveril at about 5.30pm, his intention was to have a quiet drink.

’However, inside he encountered a rowdy group from Douglas.

’His partner was abused by a number of people. He has used swear words and a hand gesture.

’It was a momentary loss of control, there was no pre-meditation.

’He approached a male and he himself was attacked. He accepts he’s overreacted to abusive comments.’

Magistrates ordered him to pay £50 costs.
