A thug from Douglas has been jailed after failing to show up for community service.
Thomas James Mcburnie, aged 20, of Palace Road, was handed a Community Service Order in March after assaulting a man in Douglas.
He was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work as punishment for the offence which took place near the Villa Marina in the early hours of October 2 last year.
However Mcburnie failed to attend his placement, and meetings with the probation service, on six occasions between April 8 and June 19.
At Douglas Courthouse on Thursday he admitted breaching the order - the court heard he’d carried out just 16 hours in total.
Mcburnie’s advocate, Peter Taylor, blamed his lack of attendance on the fact he’d secured work as a pizza delivery driver stating: ’He works any hours that are offered to him.’
He added: ’He’s remained offence-free (since being sentenced) and that is due to his employment.’
When questioned by Magistrates as to why Mcburnie hadn’t informed the service of this Mr Taylor replied: ’Perhaps in hindsight he should have been more open - they could have assisted him.’
Revoking the order, and resentencing Mcburnie to 18 weeks in custody, chair of the Magistrates bench Gill Eaton told him: ’Your record of community service is very poor.’
