A TT visitor has been fined £500 for going onto the closed course.

Carl Gentleman, of Cesar Close, Andover, Hampshire, admitted crossing the Mountain Road leading to Signpost Corner at 4.10pm on Wednesday, June 6.

Gentleman, who is 38, claimed he had not realised the road was still closed.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how, police were called after a marshal saw Gentleman walking across the road near the approach to Signpost Corner.

He was arrested at 4.20pm and admitted the offence which put him in breach of the Road Races Act 2016.

He told police he was unaware the road was still closed, saying he had not been listening to a radio and had been walking through fields.

However, Mr Swain said: ’Common sense dictates, if you’re not sure you should ask someone. If you’ve come here for the TT you’ve got to inform yourself what the rules and regulations are.’

Defending Gentleman in court his advocate Ian Kermode said: ’Mr Gentleman arrived last Sunday and is due to go back to Hampshire tomorrow (Friday).

’He has been staying at the Blackberry Lane campsite.

’He would say that he thought the racing was over. The racing was finished but the roads remained closed between 4pm and 5pm because they were practising.

’It was a genuine misunderstanding.

’He spent the night in police custody.’

Mr Kermode went on to say that his client worked as an engineer and had had no convictions for 14 years.’

Gentleman was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Gentleman was visibly upset in court.

He put his hands on his head as he was told the fine and costs were made payable forthwith with 28 days in default of payment.
