A 26-year-old visitor has been fined £450 for three driving-related offences.

Billy John Carl Johnson, of Ellesmere Street, Eccles, Greater Manchester, was fined £300 for driving with no insurance, £100 for having no driving licence, and £50 for having a defective tyre.

He also had his licence endorsed with four penalty points.

Prosecutor Michael Jelski told the court how, on March 25 at 2.48am, police saw Johnson driving a Vauxhall Corsa on Ballaquayle Road.

He was stopped and checks revealed he had no valid driving licence or insurance.

At the vehicle test centre the Corsa was found to have a defective tyre.

Defence advocate David Clegg said that his client was visiting his family on the island.

’He works in England and since this has lost his job as a result of having to attend court on the island,’ said the advocate.

Mr Clegg went on to say that his client would have difficulty paying a financial penalty forthwith due to being out of work and would be looking at serving days in default.

He added that he could raise in the region of £200 immediately and was due to leave the island that afternoon.

Acting Deputy High Bailiff Chris Arrowsmith said that it would not be appropriate to limit the financial penalty simply to what the defendant was able to pay.

Johnson was fined £300 for having no insurance, £100 for having no driving licence, and £50 for the defective tyre.

He must also pay £125 prosecution costs.

The fine and costs must be paid forthwith or there are 14 days custody in default of payment.
