There has been another case of vandalism in Onchan, leading Commissioners to call for greater police presence in the area.

The newly refurbished toilets in Onchan Park were targeted by vandals over the bank holiday weekend, in the latest case of anti-social behaviour in the village - hundreds of pounds worth of damage were also caused to the football club toilets in February.

Commissioners chair Derek Crellin said: ’Onchan Park is a popular place for the public to visit and enjoy, and the public convenience upgrade is part of a rolling programme.

’CCTV footage has been handed over to the police for investigation which may also include breaches of Covid regulations.’

David Quirk, who sits on the Commissioners board, says more needs to be done to clamp down on these incidents.

He feels they need more bobbies on the beat to discourage anti-social behaviour, saying: ’I can’t remember the last time I saw a police officer in Onchan.

’The Commissioners offices are not used at night and it’s a thing now that people like to hot desk [staff alternate between whichever desks are free].

’That would’ve been an opportunity for police to have a base in Onchan, and for them to wander round to meet different parts of the community; whether that’s the younger or elder part of the community - just to give us some comfort all the time.’
