A biker’s leg had to be amputated above the knee following a crash on the Ramsey coast road.

A 43-year-old Douglas woman admitted causing serious bodily harm by driving without due care or consideration when she appeared before Magistrates last week.

Samantha Janet Franklin, of Manor Lane, will be sentenced on March 6 after the preparation of a probation report.

The incident happened on August 30 on a derestricted section of the Ramsey coast road.

Prosecutor Barry Swain described it as an ’unfortunate incident’.

He explained that Franklin had been driving a Toyota Carola heading north towards the junction of Ballure Road.

The biker was riding his Suzuki GT750 bike in the direction of Douglas.

As Franklin approached the junction, she said she checked and thought the road was clear before she turned across into Ballure Road.

But as Franklin turned right she collided with the bike rider knocking him off, with the bike ending up on a grass embankment.

Police attended and Mr Swain said it was suggested that Franklin’s daughter had needed the toilet and she had been looking for somewhere to pull over.

The injured man was airlifted to Noble’s Hospital.

Mr Swain said that the case was suitable to remain in summary court for sentencing and Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes accepted jurisdiction.

’There was no suggestion of speeding or lengthy period of poor driving, it was just a brief moment of not spotting the motorcycle.’

Mrs Hughes also asked that the victim be given the opportunity to provide a victim impact statement before sentencing.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500.
