Police have warned teenagers who want to stage parties in the countryside that they need a fire certificate to do so.
The force has issued a warning ahead of school leavers’ proms and ’after-prom parties’ planned for 15- and 16-year-olds to take place between 11pm and 4am on various dates near Creg Ny Baa corner.
The police and fire services have spoken to the organisers from the schools, who are pupils aged 15 or 16 years.
’It is clear that the organisers have been placed in a position where they have been left solely to make all the arrangements and have the heavy burden of responsibility,’ a police spokesman said.
’The events planned have grown from previous years, as such it is now "public entertainment" and would need an application for a fire certificate for each event, with an adult taking responsibility for it.
’With it being "public entertainment" approval for the events would need a licence, under the Music and Dancing Act.
’The proposed location and nature of the events posed several risks and, as such, the constabulary has made the decision that the events cannot be supported without the correct licence and fire certificate application.
’This will be extremely disappointing to those students. However, the safety of the children is paramount and the risk of harm is too high.
’It would be irresponsible for the services to ignore those risks.
’Young people who organised these events have done a fantastic job and they should be immensely proud of themselves.
’The fact that the authorities had to instruct them to cancel the events should not be a negative reflection on any on them.’
