A motorist whose car was seen weaving and being driven erratically has been banned from driving for two years.

Lucia Shepherd, of Castlemona Avenue, Douglas, was seen by police in Peel Road, Douglas, at 12.15am on June 17.

The court heard the woman, aged 61, had driven on ’impulse’ after she had been out with her husband.

She admitted the offence and must retake her test at the end of her ban.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court Shepherd’s Vauxhall Astra was seen by police to be weaving and being driven erratically, slowing down for bends unnecessarily. Shepherd was stopped and officers said she was smelling of alcohol and slurring her words.

At police headquarters the breath/ alcohol tester was not working properly so Shepherd took a blood test.

She failed with a reading of 122 - the legal limit is 80.

Advocate Matthew Wilshaw said his client had previously been a lady of good character, adding: ’There was no one else in the vehicle, there has been no accident, and there was no excessive speed.’

He said it was an ’impulsive’ decision after she had been out with her husband.

The advocate said Shepherd had been referred to the mental health team.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes banned Shepherd from driving for two years and ordered her to pay a £900 fine and £125 prosecution costs.
