A Castletown woman has admitted faking a charity appeal to con the public out of £1,865.

Kayleigh Joanne Jones, of Springfield Terrace, set up a Just Giving page asking for £2,250 for a ficticious eight-year-old boy who she said was suffering after a bereavement.

The 28-year-old also shared it on Facebook to promote her appeal with people sending donations of £1,865 in support to the Just Giving page.

Jones pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court that member of the public had been donating but some had raised concerns about the appeal.

Jones was spoken to by the police and said that she was having difficulties.

Jones was said to have almost convinced herself that the story about the boy and his family was true.

Mr Swain and defence advocate Peter Taylor agreed that the case was suitable to remain in summary court for sentencing.

Mr Taylor said: ’In her favour, she handed herself in to police and wanted to make a clean breast of it.’

The advocate said that all the money had since been paid back.

And he said that Jones had mental health issues which she was seeing mental health services for.

Magistrates ordered that the probation report consider all options, including custody.

Bail was granted to Jones in the sum of £500 with conditions that Jones reside at her home address and contact probation.
