A 33-year-old Douglas man has now admitted an assault on a woman after he grabbed her around the throat.
Paul Allan Bollon, of Mona Drive, will be sentenced on May 14 after a probation report has been completed.
Bollon pleaded guilty to common assault on a female after previously denying the offence.
A trial had been due to take place next week.
Prosecutor Roger Kane told the court how, on November 30 at 11.45pm, police were called to an address at Hillside Avenue in Douglas.
Bollon and the woman were in a relationship and lived together at the address.
The woman said they had argued and Bollon had grabbed her by the throat and pushed her to the ground.
She said she slapped his face and he again grabbed her by the throat.
The woman called the police and Bollon left the address.
She was said to be crying and visibly shaken, saying that she feared for her safety.
She said that when Bollon grabbed her by the throat she felt like she was losing consciousness.
Bollon was later arrested initially on suspicion of drink-driving but a blood test result proved that he was under the legal limit.
Defence advocate Kate Alexander said that the facts were accepted but asked for a probation report with input from the Drug and Alcohol Team.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered that the report consider all options, including custody.
Bail was granted with conditions that Bollon contact probation and not leave the island without court permission.
